Why Libraries Are so Important

Now more than ever, society’s view on the importance of libraries has dwindled. There are many reasons that this is bad, but the most prominent reasons are the easy-to-access education a library provides and its contribution to our local economy.

It’s become increasingly apparent that a library is an asset to an education, whether that be through online learning, social interaction, or the seemingly limitless resources available. Psychologically speaking, learning at a library is able to help you retain information better than learning at home or school. Environment plays a huge factor in motivation which correlates with success and the library is a place with a surplus of motivation, with books and other hard working people surrounding you. It makes learning seem like less of a chore. Also, according to a study done at The University of Pennsylvania, 73% of those surveyed at the New York Public Library confirmed that the library boosts their optimistic view of the future.

Contrary to popular belief that libraries don’t help local economies because everything is free, librarians are quite skilled in helping people get hired for a job, as they are able to help with interview questions and job applications. Also, our Cincinnati Public Library partners with our local government to help small businesses thrive, giving them all kinds of resources for business.

If libraries don’t get enough attention, they will be shut down, and that is a big problem. At the end of each year, libraries count their library card holders, and this goes into their decision of shutting down. If you don’t have a library card, please go get one and help our libraries!
